Toepen
How to play Toepen
Toepen is the Netherlands' favourite pub card game — loud, fast and built on nerve. It is a trick game wrapped around a bluff: you don't want to collect lives, and at any moment a brave (or sneaky) player can knock on the table to raise what the whole round is worth. You play against three bots — or play online against three friends in real time.

The deck and the goal
Toepen uses a 32-card pack (7 up to ace) with an unusual ranking. From highest to lowest a suit runs: 10, 9, 8, 7, ace, king, queen, jack — so the ten is the boss and the jack is the runt. Everyone is dealt four cards. There are no trumps. The aim is simple: don't be the first player to reach ten lives. When someone does, the game ends and that player is the loser — everyone else survives.
Playing the tricks
The player to the dealer's left leads. You must follow the led suit if you can; if you can't, play anything. The highest card of the led suit wins the trick, and that winner leads the next one. After four tricks the round is over, and here is the twist that makes Toepen tick: the player who wins the fourth and final trick is safe and loses nothing. Every other player still in the round loses lives equal to the current stake. So you are not trying to dodge tricks — you are trying to save a big card for the very end.
Knocking (the toep)
On your turn, before you play, you may knock. This raises the round's stake by one life. Everyone else still in must answer: accept and stay in for the bigger stake, or fold and drop out immediately, paying the stake as it stood before your knock. If everyone folds, you take the round on the spot. A round that started worth one life can quickly be worth three or four. You can't knock twice in a row unless another player knocks in between.
Strategy
Hold your tens and nines back — winning an early trick only hands you the lead, but winning the last trick keeps you safe. Knock when you are confident you'll take the final trick, and use it to bully weak hands into folding. When someone knocks and your hand is full of jacks and queens, folding for one life beats staying in to lose three. Tap a card to play it; legal cards are highlighted, and the knock / accept / fold buttons appear when it's your move. N starts a new game.
