Cassino

How to play Cassino

Cassino — often spelt Casino — is the classic English-language fishing card game, a relative of Italy's Scopa but played on a full 52-card deck with richer ways to capture. You play head-to-head against a bot, racing to 21 points — or play online against a friend: press Play online to be matched, or share a private link to play together.

The cards

The capture values are Ace = 1 and the number cards 2–10 at face value. The face cards (Jack, Queen, King) have no number — they can only capture by pairing. Four cards are dealt to each player and four face-up to the table; when both hands are empty, four more are dealt to each until the deck runs out.

Capturing

  • By pairing — play a card to take every table card of the same rank (a 7 takes all 7s; a King takes all Kings).
  • By summing — play a number card to take any sets of number cards that add up to its value (an 8 takes a 5 and a 3, or two 4s, or an 8).
  • You may take a pair and several summing sets with a single card, all at once.
  • Trail — if you can't or don't want to capture, lay your card on the table.

Clearing the entire table with a capture is a sweep, worth a bonus point. When the last card is played, the side that captured most recently takes any cards still on the table.

Scoring

At the end of a round the captured cards are scored: most cards 3, most spades 1, Big Cassino (the 10♦) 2, Little Cassino (the 2♠) 1, each Ace 1, and 1 per sweep. The first player to 21 wins.

Strategy

Chase the scoring cards — the aces, the 2♠ and especially the 10♦ — and the spades, since "most spades" and "most cards" swing whole points. Hold a card that matches the table so you can sweep when the table is light. Be careful trailing a high number card: you may hand your opponent an easy summing capture. Tap a card in your hand, then tap the table cards you want, and press Capture (or Trail). N starts a new game. (This streamlined version leaves out "builds", a future addition.)
